Motives for Tattoo Removal:
Tattoos have grown to become more than simple body art. Many people get tattoos that have deep symbolic meanings and represent specific experiences in their lives. Regardless of the reason for getting a tattoo, people may change their minds in time and want to have their tattoos removed.
More than 20 percent of people with tattoos want to have their ink removed. With more and more people getting tattoos, there is an increase in the number of people who end up with designs they regret and choose to have them removed.
A large population of our patients/clients also present simply wanting a tattoo cover up and or lightening, with the goal of changing the tattoo design.
PicoSure -State of the Art Tattoo Removal
From the early 1990’s to 2013, Q-Switched (nanosecond laser technology) was considered the gold standard for removing tattoos until the launch of the Q-Switched PicoSure laser system which is the world’s first picosecond laser platform. PicoSure is the new gold standard in laser tattoo removal.
PicoSure laser-tattoo removal technology requires less downtime, reduces the length of treatment sessions in half, and is very effective against even the most stubborn of colors.
PicoSure uses energy in short bursts to target the various pigments of the tattoo. The PressureWave technology delivers pressure that breaks down the ink particles under the skin’s surface. These particles are then absorbed by your body and filtered out in the lymphatic system through the properties of normal metabolism. This process takes around six to eight weeks.
Why Is PicoSure Better Than Other Forms of Tattoo Removal Treatment?
A picosecond is 1000 times faster than a nanosecond. This difference in speed and pulse width between (nanosecond lasers) and the new gold standard PicoSure (picosecond laser) actually changes the mechanism of action from a photothermal mechanism (heating of ink) into a primarily photomechanical mechanism (pressure and shattering of the ink).
Compared with nanosecond pulse durations, picosecond lasers provide fewer adverse effects, such as scarring and/or hypopigmentation, due to reduced nonspecific targeting.
PicoSure delivers more concentrated energy, which allows for the use of lower treatment fluence (energy). This reduction in treatment fluence decreases adverse side effects, such as posttreatment pigment alteration or scarring.
The photomechanical mechanism or pressure generated by a PicoSure laser is referred to as PressureWave technology and is so intense that ink is broken into minuscule dust-like particles, reducing treatment times in half! The ink particles are transformed into small fragments that the body can absorb and eliminate through the lymphatic system.
The great thing about the PicoSure laser is it has been proven to successfully treat dark, resistant blue and green inks, as well as previously-treated, recalcitrant tattoos that were not successfully cleared in the past.

A 2016 research study titled Lasers in tattoo and pigmentation control: role of PicoSure laser system was published in The Journal titled Medical Devices: Evidence and Research. The study design consisted of a comprehensive review of research articles to validate the continued application of the PicoSure laser system for tattoo removal.
Conclusion: tattoo removal by laser systems is an evolving field that has experienced recent major advances in the use of picosecond lasers, including the introduction of the PicoSure laser. In the few comparison studies available, picosecond lasers are the most effective, requiring less treatments and lower fluences than nanosecond lasers. In addition, when measured, patient satisfaction has been rated highly by the patients. Hence, although Q-switched lasers using nanosecond pulses have been stalwarts in laser tattoo removal since the 1990s, recent technological advancements in picosecond lasers have revolutionized the field. Multiple recent studies have strengthened the argument for using picosecond pulse duration lasers for the removal of tattoos. Picosecond lasers are a safe and efficient therapy model for removal of tattoo pigments, most notably in darkly pigmented tattoos.
