Brand New Generation CoolSculpting Applicators with Additional FDA Clearance
It’s called stubborn fat for a reason; no matter how much you diet and exercise, it’s virtually impossible to target annoying problem areas: areas such as around the arms, muffin tops, love handles, and lower belly pooches. But now there is a safe, noninvasive fat reduction procedure — cool sculpting. Only CoolSculpting specifically targets fat cells, eliminating them through an effective, noninvasive fat reduction procedure that exercise and diet sometimes just can’t resolve.
Surgical and laser procedures that reduce fat can also destroy other tissues and cause long and painful recovery periods. Fortunately, CoolSculpting fat reduction doesn’t burn, shatter or extract any cells. Developed by Harvard scientists, our unique, FDA-cleared and patented procedure uses a targeted cooling process that reduces the fat cells below the surface of the skin, literally freezing them. Body sculpting with CoolSculpting is very precise and only freezes fat cells. Once crystallized, the fat cells are naturally reduced from your body.
The History of CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting (cryo-lipolysis) has been in research and development since 1999. CoolSculpting was invented by Dr.’s Dieter Manstein and Rox Anderson, who are both associated with the Wellman Center for Photomedicine, affiliated with the Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. Their invention was inspired by two early observational research studies which hypothesized that fat cells are hypersensitive to cold — more so than skin, nerve, and muscle:
- 1970 – Popsicle panniculitis: a phenomenon observed that reported the loss of cheek fat that occurs while sucking on a frozen popsicle
- 1980 – Equestrian cold panniculitis: phenomenon observed that reported the loss of inner thigh fat in women riding horses in cold weather
Both studies reported a correlation between the exposure of a specific body area to cold temperature resulting in fat loss to that area. From this correlation, Dr. Manstein and Dr. Anderson hypothesized that perhaps applying extreme cold to fat (as the target) would result in fat loss as well.
With trial and error, Dr. Manstein and Dr. Anderson discovered that fat was much more sensitive to cold than nerves, skin, muscle and other body tissue. The doctors were able to pinpoint a precise temperature that served to maximize the destruction of fat, while leaving all of the other structures unharmed, and thus the concept of Cool Sculpting was created. Since the initial dedicated Harvard research of Dr. Manstein and Dr. Anderson in 1999, the cryo-lipolysis journey leading to Cool Sculpting has culminated in an exclusive patented technology owned and operated by Zeltiq, with the accumulation of several FDA clearances since inception.
The first US 2010 FDA Clearance was in 2010 for the Flanks, with Zeltiq gaining several additional clearances since then.
In 2017, Allergan, the manufacture of Botox, Juvederm and Kybella, acquired the company and now you can earn points with your Brilliant Distinctions Account when you treat yourself with CoolSculpting.
Am I a Good Candidate for CoolSculpting?
While men and women often store fat in different areas of their body, both can be good candidates for cool sculpting. Generally speaking, a good candidate for a cool sculpting treatment would be within 30 lbs or 13.6 kg. of their ideal weight. Excess areas of fat that can be treated would include back of the arms, inner thighs, flanks, bra fat, male breasts, and abdomen. During our complimentary consultation we will determine whether we feel you are a weight loss, hormone replacement or CoolSculpting candidate, or a hybrid of the above. People who are interested in losing weight may choose to start with our weight loss program and then proceed with CoolSculpting when they reach their ideal body weight. People who are in relatively good shape with stubborn pockets of fat usually start with CoolSculpting.

What to Expect During Your CoolSculpting Procedure
During your first visit to our cool sculpting office in Bellevue, you will meet with a staff member and Dr. O’Connell for a one-on-one consultation. They will take the time to discuss a holistic approach to reshaping your body. Together, you’ll discuss problem areas where you’d like to eliminate excess fat. Once you’ve put together a treatment plan, your next step is to begin your treatments. Scheduling is easy, and multiple areas can be treated on a same day, or scheduled for different days. During the procedure, you can relax — read a book, catch up on a TV show, or even take a nap! Applicators will be secured to your treatment area and will deliver controlled cooling to the targeted fat.
Post-procedure manual massage at our clinic will increase treatment efficacy. Research has shown that post treatment ultrasound evaluation measurements demonstrate greater fat-layer reduction on the massage side vs. non-massage side.
Results of CoolSculpting Treatment
After having performed CoolSculpting on hundreds of patients over the last several years, we feel that the clinical results can be explained by following a bell shaped curve analogy with a small percentage of people noticing results at the 4 week mark, with an average seeing results at 8 weeks, and another small percentage seeing results at the 12 week mark.* Watch some of our videos to see the stories of others’ successes with cool sculpting.
*Individual results may vary.
The before picture will be taken on the day of the treatment. We will schedule a follow up appointment with you and assess the results at that time. Then we can decide if we achieved our body sculpting goals or whether we should consider another treatment, as some people do desire a second treatment.
CoolSculpting Side Effects and Risks
CoolSculpting is one of the safest procedures performed by Dr. O’Connell & Serenity Rejuvenation Staff. It is completely noninvasive. However, one can anticipate any of the following potential side effects the first few days and weeks after treatment
- Redness, bruising, and swelling
- Tenderness, cramping, and aching
- Itching, sensitivity, tingling, and numbness (numbness can persist up to several weeks)
Historically, delayed onset pain has been a rare phenomenon, which occurs approximately between days 5 and 7 in a rare subset of patients. It is characterized by hypersensitivity of the sensory nerves in the area that was treated. Dr. O’Connell has an effective pain management protocol for these patients.
We are also excited to be offering the brand new generation applicators, with which there have been zero reported cases of delayed onset pain.
