Hologic Advanced Body Composition Scanner
One of the key areas to assess when diagnosing the effects of age on a body is to measure the density of your bones. A bone density evaluation can give a physiatrist vital information about your body that would be difficult to get by other means. A bone density scan can detect bones that are just starting to thin and it can also give your doctor an idea of how quickly osteoporosis is progressing. The Hologic Advanced Body Composition Scanner has been found by Dr. O’Connell to be the easiest, most standard and accurate means to test bone density.
Accurate, Evidence-Based Treatments with the Hologic Advanced Body Composition Scanner
Dr. O’Connell’s extensive practice of physical medicine and rehabilitation requires highly accurate evidence-based evaluation, diagnosis and management of disabling conditions. He relies on the Hologic Advanced Body Composition Scanner for precise bone density information.
Helping patients keep their bones healthy requires the highest quality imaging to reveal conditions such as fractures that might go unnoticed with other machines. Bone density is a vital clue when determining overall health in older patients. The Hologic Advanced Body Composition Scanner system is the only system designed to assess three major health conditions:
- Cardiovascular disease
Other critical medical conditions that cause bone loss can also be investigated if the scanner results indicate thinning bones.
- Kidney or liver disease
- Thyroid abnormalities
- Lack of vitamin D
- Intestinal disease
Clinical Management: Weight Loss Intervention
Data was obtained from a diet and exercise weight loss intervention. Serial measurements of Fat Mass Index (FMI) are plotted over time. There was a drastic reduction in FMI from above the median value for the subject’s age, ethnicity, and gender to well below the median occurring over a period of about six months. The compartmental trending plot shows striking decreases in the fat mass compartment and relatively minor declines in the lean mass compartment during the intervention.
The color image mapping of these trends displayed in the serial whole-body images provides positive patient feedback and may be useful as a counseling tool. The images reveal a loss of nearly pure subcutaneous and visceral fat (light orange) over time.
Who Should Get a Hologic Advanced Body Composition Bone Density Scan?
Dr. O’Connell may recommend this scan for a number of reasons. It generally depends upon age, risk factors and previous examinations. Some of the key health factors that may require a bone scan are:
- Postmenopausal women due to drops in bone strengthening estrogen levels. This is mostly considered for women over 65 years of age.
- A history of bone fracture as an adult.
- Having taken oral steroids for more than three months.
- Adult body weight under 127 pounds.
- Men over the age of 70.
- Any immediate family with a “fragility fracture” suggesting a tendency toward osteoporosis in the family.
How Does the Hologic Advanced Body Composition Scanner Work?
This advanced technology machine uses very low energy radiation to establish the density of the bone. There is little to no special preparation needed to have this performed, though you should not take calcium supplements for at least 24 hours prior to your test. It is comfortable and quick and clinically shown to be safe.
The Ultimate Bone Density Scanning Tool
The scanner sends a narrow beam of low-dose X-rays with two separate energy peaks through the bones that are being examined. One peak is absorbed by bone and the other by soft tissue. The difference between the two values is your bone mineral density. Generally, the areas under investigation for a central examination are in the hip region and lower spine.
Peripheral tests simply involve scanning a finger, hand, forearm or foot. Depending on the parts of the body under examination, the test could run from 10-20 minutes. It is a quick and painless procedure with no recovery time necessary.
Test results include two scores. The T score measures your bone mass and compares it to peak bone mass as found in a young adult. This can estimate your risk for osteoporosis and for developing a fracture. The Z score compares your results to others your age and gender. High or low scores may require further medical tests.
Benefits of Getting a Hologic Advanced Body Composition Scan
- Most accurate for diagnosis of osteoporosis and fracture risk
- Easily track the progression of osteoporosis (improving or worsening)
- Radiation amount is extremely small with usually no side effects
- Use in conjunction with blood tests and other test to pinpoint degenerative conditions in the body
